About Ask For A Sign
About Gina
I am married with two young adult children. My husband, "My Joe," is a miracle guy and my love. We are certainly a love story. I'd say that my life has been rather "interesting."
I got sober in grad school not long before I met my husband. I told our kids when they were young that "I am allergic to alcohol. I break out in stupid."
And let me confirm that God has a sense of humor - here's an example. In 2000, I got this hard to accept 'call' to write Christian music. God and I argued about this one for a while! But eventually my prayers and complaints were answered and I asked my daughter's drum teacher, JD, to teach me both drums and then how to compose.
My drum teacher became my recording engineer/writer - Above the C Productions. JD is a busy guy and it took us 1 1/2 years to complete three songs (Ask, Ashes & Abyss) resulting in an EP, Ask.
Then, nothing short of a miracle happened when another prayer was answered with the addition of Robert Finan (ANB Recordings) and our little studio group became 'ASK for a Sign.'
Rob and I created songs out of my lyrics and melody lines. I sing all the vocals but in several 'voices.' The album is called ARISE and was released January of 2008. It is based on the events of Holy Week, that is, the life of Jesus Christ and his followers from Palm Sunday to the Resurrection and Ascension. It is a bit like Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell but with a female perspective.
I had done relaxation with individuals in the office since 1983 and made tapes for them to use as homework. I always wanted to record a CD. God gave me this very soothing voice. I got a lot of encouragement and requests for a "Dr. Gina to go" and then in 2007 I started doing this type of thing in groups.
That year, Robert and I started recording relaxation and meditation CDs. We first released Relax with Gina. This was well-received and we got a lot of encouragement to combine my voice with our music.
So Robert and I re-mixed ten of the songs from Arise and combined them with my calming voice to create Journey with Gina, recording spoken imagery with the music. Come listen & enjoy!!!
Our next project was just the instrumental, Arise 2, music to nap to or meditate to. People tell me they like it to use with their own meditation practices. Oh, and there is a video - a visual meditation on you tube of a beautiful sunset. My son Grayson and his friend Alex filmed it and combined it with my version of the serenity prayer, Ask.
Robert and I just completed a new album of recovery/spiritual songs titled End Of The Beginning, released in 2011. Some journeys take longer than others. This album details my journey with a few added twists. What it was like, what happened and what it's like now.
The gift of desperation, when we first experience it, is not seen as a gift at all; it is a little like visiting hell, "dark nights awakenings," and it feels like no one around you has ever experienced what you're experiencing. But without this 'reaching bottom,' change might never come.
There is something beautiful about change and growth after we get through it, but at the time it is almost unbearably painful. However, that event or those events become the cornerstone or the key to change and for me when I 'came to.'
Surrender is not something that comes easily to most people, and that includes me. Reaching out to that 'power greater than ourselves' in my case at that time, the God of my misunderstanding, brought me to my knees. When I had nowhere else to go I prayed, returned to my faith tradition and who would have ever guessed that the answer to my prayers would be fellowship.
I was no longer alone and the healing could start. It usually has been a much slower process than I would like. But that first step was truly 'the end of the beginning'. I had to change and I needed help. I needed to find the God of my understanding and I could not do this alone.
The process for me involves healing, by uncovering my errors or sins, making amends, prayer and meditation. I will never 'arrive' at my final destination in this world; it is always a process of spiritual growth.
God has a sense of humor. I have engaged in many adventures and mischief along the paths placed before me. I have found love in unlikely places. I have seen and continue to see miracles, like my husband Joe. He naturally has his own faith journey. God has blessed us with children who God loaned to us for a relatively short time. They have their own paths. It is not my path and sometimes it is hard to stay out of the way.
Joy can be found watching others grow. I believe God wants us to serve others. My attitude often needs adjustment so that I can be of service. Sometimes I find myself in remarkable situations and complain to God that I don't want to do things but I believe he understands that prayer well. He has blessed me with many signs along the way and I continue to ask for them.
If I want to keep what I have, I have to give it away and some of those who receive the gift drift away. This can be a sad experience but God's arms are always open for them to 'come back home'.
Blessings,
-Regina
